PowerIDE! v2.1 PRODUCT OVERVIEW ================ PowerIDE! for DOS/Windows is a universal application interface and I/O manager for Enhanced IDE peripherals. Full support is provided for the following IDE peripherals on multiple channels: * Standard IDE Hard Disks * Enhanced IDE Hard Disks up to 8 Gigabytes in Capacity * ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) compliant IDE CD-ROM Drives PowerIDE! also contains several DOS CD-ROM utilities and a diagnostic program. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS =================== PowerIDE! can be used in any IBM PC (AT) compatible and VESA Local Bus (VL) based system, that has one of the following operating systems or operating environments already installed and running: * DOS version 5.0 or later * Windows v3.1 or later * Windows for Workgroups v3.11 or later PowerIDE! is designed to handle multiple IDE controllers, including those built into the system motherboard and/or the following Future Domain add-in controllers which may be installed in the system: * IDE-16000/16002/16003/16010 series controllers (ISA-bus) * IDE-16020 controller with BIOS (ISA-bus) * IDE-16030 dual-channel controller with BIOS (ISA-bus) * IDE-32000 dual-channel controller with BIOS (VL-bus) Each IDE controller channel requires a unique I/O port address and Interrupt (IRQ) to work properly. The Primary channel (I/O port 1F0h, IRQ 14) is typically located on the system motherboard. The Secondary channel (I/O 170h, IRQ 15) is typically provided by an add-in controller or it can be built into the system motherboard in newer PC models. Consult the installation guide that came with the IDE controller or the system User's Manual for configuration information. Each IDE channel can handle up to 2 peripherals with the first configured as the Master, and the second as the Slave. Consult the User's Manual that came with the peripheral for configuration information. INSTALLATION ============ Installation of the drivers is accomplished by running the SETUP.EXE program. This program can be run from either the DOS prompt or the Windows Program Manager. If you are using Windows, we suggest that you run SETUP.EXE from the Program Manager. Running SETUP from Windows installs both the DOS and Windows drivers while running from the DOS prompt installs only the DOS drivers. SETUP.EXE will determine what drivers your system will need and modify the following system files for you: * CONFIG.SYS * AUTOEXEC.BAT * SYSTEM.INI You will then be required to reboot your computer system after all the modifications have been made. USER'S MANUAL ============= The PowerIDE! User's Manual is in an electronic form that is included on this diskette. A viewer program (MANUAL.EXE) is included to read the User's Manual text (MANUAL.TXT). PowerIDE! also contains on-line help during the installation process, press or select the Help button to invoke the help feature. If the 32-bit Disk Access driver is loaded, make sure a permanent swap file is created to take advantage of the 32-bit disk access feature. Refer to the Microsoft Windows or Windows for Workgroups User's Guide for more information on creating swap files. 2. Each hard disk must be partitioned and formatted before it can be accessed. Refer to the DOS User's Guide for more information on partitioning and formatting a drive. 3. The following combination of peripherals have been noted not to co-exist as Master, Slave configurations: Conner CFA810A/CFA1080A as Master with the following vendor drives as Slave: Hard disks IBM DPEA-31080 IBM DPEA-3810 IBM DSAA-3360 IBM DSAA-3720 IBM DSAA-3540 Maxtor 7171AT Maxtor 7546AT IBM DPEA-31080/3810/DSAA-3360/3720/3540 as Master with the following vendor/model drives as Slave: 4. When installing a CD-ROM as slave on the primary channel (I/O Port 1F0,IRQ 14) to allow Windows 32-Bit Disk Access to support the hard disk the following statements must exist in the CONFIG.SYS, and SYSTEM.INI file: In the CONFIG.SYS file: device=[]ATASPI16.SYS /C:1F0,14,3F6 device=[]FDATACD.SYS PowerIDE! will be supporting the CD-ROM drive. In the SYSTEM.INI file: [386Enh] device=[path]ATASPI16.386 device=[path]ATASPIXP.386 ATASPI16=/C:1F0 device=[path]FDINT13.386 device=[path]FDATA32B.386 32BitDiskAccess=On VirtualHDIrq=Off ;device=*int13 ;device=*wdctrl This will allow PowerIDE! to control the primary channel and enable Windows 32BitDiskAccess for the hard disk and support for the CD-ROM drive. 5. Some Windows high resolution display drivers have shown conflicts if the PowerIDE! Windows drivers display information on the screen. If you experience problems in starting Windows with a high resolution display driver loaded, remove the "PowerIDE!Options=/V" line in the SYSTEM.INI file. 6. PowerIDE! does not co-exist with other disk management software products such as Ontrack's Disk Manager, etc. CUSTOMER SERVICE ================ If you have any comments or questions, our Customer Service representatives are available at the following times: Monday through Friday 7 AM to 5 PM (Pacific Standard Time) Phone: (714) 253-0440 FAX: (714) 253-0429 BBS: (714) 253-0432 Modem: 2400 - 14.4K Baud rate Protocol:8 data bits, No Parity ,1 Stop bit You may also correspond via the following address: Future Domain Corporation Customer Service Department 2801 McGaw Avenue Irvine, CA 92714 U.S.A.
